Twice as Nice and More Productive!

By Leo Marquis, NDS VP of Field Engineering

As busy as we are during our fast paced work days, sometimes we need to stop and reflect.  Are we stuck in our ways and do we continue to do things the same way every day? And, when asked why, is the answer, “because that is how I have always done it”?

In recent years, companies and organizations have found that they can improve productivity and ergonomics in their work environment by providing dual monitors for their employees.  While daily tasks can be accomplished with only one monitor, two monitors allow the same tasks to be accomplished in a fraction of the time.

Think that a second monitor is an unnecessary investment; Think again!  Articles in both Business.com and the New York Times state that a second monitor can help to increase productivity by 20-30 percent.  Statistics from the University of Utah show that a second monitor can save each employee 2.5 hours each day.  If for example, you have 10 employees, a second monitor for each employee can save your organization 25 hours a day, 125 hours a week, 550 hours a month and 6,275 hours a year.  If your organization has 10 employees, a second monitor for each employee can save your organization 25 hours a day, 125 hours a week, 550 hours a month and 6,275 hours a year. This adds up to real cost savings!

A second monitor helps to increase productivity by decreasing the time it takes to complete certain tasks, including:

  • Entering data!
  • Comparing documents or reports side-by-side
  • Comparing an original image to the finished one in graphic design
  • Spreading large spreadsheets across two monitors for viewing in their entirety
  • Leaving email open while you work
  • Compiling information from several different sources
  • Researching information for reports or correspondence

There are many new products on the market that will efficiently and ergonomically support dual monitors for your office.  A simple internet search for “dual monitors” will send you in the right direction. The next step is to determine if your existing workstation can support the extra hardware.  Many workstations come with a VGA port as well as a combination of display ports, DVI ports and HDMI.
